I was out on the lake yesterday in pretty brisk conditions - wind gusting to 30 - and caught a windshift that jibed the main when I wasn't expecting it. Busted all but three sail slides . Fortunately the sail itself wasn't damaged (it's only two years old, so still practically new condition). Why do sailmakers even use the el-cheapo plastic slides when the stainless-bail slides only cost $1 more and are practically indestructible? They save $10 and I get to spend a whole weekend sewing on the new ones.

Anyway, my question is, what size? Looking at the Defender catalog, the Ronstan stainless-bail slides come in three sizes: 45mm x 9mm, 48mm x 11mm, and 50mm x 12mm. Quiet Time is a tall rig, and I have noticed that the mast gate seems to be smaller than the gate on my old C-25 (#1205); the standard 1/2" Davis Sail Stopper won't go through, I had to grind the sides of the slide down to about 3/8" before it would go through the gate. This implies that the 50mm x 12mm Ronstan slide is probably too big, right?

Not sure about the size but I think the reason for the "cheapo plastic" slides is exactly what happend to you. The slides broke rather that the sail ripping or the mast track being dammaged. In a max stress situation, like an accidental jibe, something's got to give and the plastic slides are the cheapest things to replace.

I'm with Renzo on that. I would want something plasticy to give rather than something else of much greater cost.
Why haven't I noticed what a great picture that is of Zingara??

Daniel - Thanks for the complement on the photo , it was taken by the committee boat at the finish line just as we were hit by a gust. But I've always thought it would have been a better picture if there were some boats behind me - (we finished last that race).

You can buy the plastic slides at West Marine, they are 3/8 inch.

I don't know the metric conversion.
