I bit the bullet and ordered the reseal kit from CD. Seems all of the windows leak at various times depending on the intensity and direction of the rain. Any one with any experience they can share? Many thanks!
The instructions that come with the kit say to use a helper when reassembling. No joke. It's a mess trying to do it single handed. I did one window and took the rest to the glass shop and they did them all in about 2 hours or less. $75. The one I did was a mess. The ones they did were very nice. Make sure you get a good seal when you rebed the assemblies into the openings, or you'll have the same problems you started with. I used 4200 to put them back in the openings. Just take the screws down to snug, then go back in 12 hours and tighten them down.
Did the same job last year. Use De-Bondo around the edge inside and outside-one window at a time. Give it 15-20 minutes and then go inside and put a hand one the window and start pushing. Nothing will happen at first then it will start to move. Give it another shot of juice. When you get it out, use 3M Adhesive Rever to get all the gunk off. You will find voids around the edge of the window hole. Use West and micro-balls in a paste to fill them in. Follow instruction sheets and above response to put it back together.
I saw the notes in previous threads about taking it to a window shop for $75. When I took them apart I found all this gunk to remove and took it to a window shop. He quoted $110 and I ok'ed it. He called back and said he needed $150. I said ok. When he finished, all the gunk was still on the outside. I had expected it to be removed--my fault.
In spite of it all, not a bad job and it works.
The hardest part is getting the old putty off. Good luck!
My portholes leaked like crazy. That was nine years ago. I applied windshield sealant (auto parts store) around each porthole (smearing between the gasket rubber and the glass) and nary a leak since. I have had to re-seal one window since (but only because I brought the boat to Florida where everything dies a quicker death.
The deed is done - 9 hours later - all six windows are back in, a helper was good, but the admiral DOES get impatient.... The kit from CD was fine. enough extra gasket material to do one additional window. The tubes of silicon and 4200 are just enough, I panicked and bought additional tubes of each at WM 1/2 way through the process as I thought we'd be close - turns out I didn't need them after all. I went heavy w/ both of the goos - as mentioned the seal between the frame and openings is key, and the 4200 was easy to work with. Am glad that project is over...
