There was a discussion back in 2002 about what if anything to put on the nonskid deck surfaces to keep them from absorbing dirt and other stuff where it was suggested to either wax them or just let them go. "Sure Step" and 'Poly Glo" were mentioned also.

I tried SeaBrite Nonskid Deck Cleaner which is supposed to coat the surface with Teflon, and it was a great cleaner but I can't tell any difference as to absorbtion of dirt after applying. There is a product called Woody Wax that claims to do the job without being slick.

Anybody found the right stuff for nonskid areas yet?

You got it right in that there seems to be 3 products that are normally used for the non-skif areas. All 3 were reviewed about a year or so ago in practical sailor and I have used 2 of them. The three are Aurora's Sure Step, Starbrite's Non-skid Cleaner/Wax and the Woddy's Non-Skid Wax.

I bought the Sure-Step mail-order and found that it is a bit expensive and was so-so for the non-skid areas. I have yet to sue the Starbrite Non-Skid product but have...about 6 bottles of that stuff. Why so much ? Well...in my area Boat US is located - The Headquarters. Attached to Boat US Headquarters is their Boat US store...which everyone knows is now West Marine. That is two West Marine stores in my area. But the West marine Store attached to the Boat US Headquarters still carries the Boat US name outside and is still getting rid of a number of old products that they had with the Boat US name...part of becoming a West Marine store. I do not think they have it any more but they had about 60-100 bottles left of the non-skid cleaner/wax which was the same as the Starbrite product but had the Boat US name on it. To get rid of it, they were selling it for a fraction of the original cost which originally was around $12 for 32 ounces or something like that. They were selling the old bottles for about $2 each. Then this winter, they moved the bottles to the clearance tables and were selling ti for around $.85 each. So that explains why I have about 6 bottles of it. Just have not gottern around to using it yet.

The Woody's wax is like liguid gold. It is super expensive considering the small bottles it is sold in. believe it is something like 8-12 ounces for about $15, compared to the Starbrite which is cheaper and sold in a 16 oz bottle and thr Sure Step...well the Sure Step is sold in a semi-liquid pasted cup believe in 16oz size for less than the Woody's product in the smaller size.

Practical Sailor rated the Sure Step the bottom of the three in effectiveness, the Starbrite as middle of the road and the Woody's product as tops !

But the Woody's Wax is so expensive when compared to equivalent ounces of the other products that it is cost prohibitive to use this on a regular basis ! We have so much non-skid on a catalina that it would probably take at least 2 bottles of the Woody's Wax to do all non-skid sections of the Catalina 25 and the cost would be....I estimate over $30 for just one treatment.

The benfits of these products is that they supposedly keep up the shine/protection of non-skid areas and do not make the area slippery when wet. My experience with the Sure-Step was that this is true.

Woody Wax seems to be the most highly rated.

Question #2 is should the gelcoated textured areas be treated the same as the rubber-type nonskid? I tried wax on the gelcoat and it's not too slick but it was hard to get the wax out of the grooves and it looks yellow.

I've used wax (the regular stuff, not the cleaner waxes) on my nonskid without any issues.
