I decided to replace the old wood on my motor mount with the plastic board from Catalina Direct. I received the new stainless steel backing plate but now they are telling me that the plastic board arrival will be delayed by a whole month because they don't have any in stock.
Does anybody know of any alternatives to where I can get a plastic board that fits? I looked on westmarine.com to no avail. I suppose I could get a piece of wood, but I really wanted the plastic... I can't put this boat in the water without it! Thanks,
I had the same problem. I got a piece of HDPE (high density polyethelyne) and made my own for half the price. I also used a piece of it to make the bow eyebolt backing.
I picked up a garelick plastic board that needed to have some holes drilled, but it worked great. This was many years ago and we've since gotten a different mount completely, but it is a viable solution.
A few years back I searched high and low for a piece for my old boat. I could only find it at Tap Plastic. It was very expensive for a custom piece of that size. I made a mounting plate using three pieces of hard wood. Glued together with Gorilla glue. With several coats of Spur varnish. It worked well. The plastic will be maintenance free.
I wonder if you couldn't laminate some of those nylon cutting boards you see everywhere using gorrilla glue or some other adhesive? Then you could just cut it to the shape and size you need.
Did you get the HDPE from Tap Plastics as others here have suggested? The catalina-direct website shows the dimensions of it, so I suppose I could make it.
I am curious though: The max thickness they have is 1 inch, and on the Catalina Direct website it says it is 1.5 inches. Is that a problem? Also - how did you go about cutting it? Did you have to spend a lot of time sanding it down? Thanks, wallace
Actually, I got it on eBay from a seller named hman16 for $7.00 plus 14 shipping. It was 7 1/4 x 23 3/4 x1 1/2. I used a 7 x 8 piece to build a mast cradle to help raise the mast, a 2x2 piece for the bow eye and the rest for the motor mount. It cuts very easily with a circular saw... Not so good with a scroll saw.
