My speedometer registers between 1-2 knots, even when motoring along at 5 knots. Any ideas what might be the problem? I've got the original equipment (Signet / Standard Horizon) setup. Can the impeller be removed while the boat is in the water? I've never tried this move.

Bruce,

You might have a fouled impeller or even a paddlewheel with a few broken/missing paddles.

Yes, you can remove the unit while it is in the water. My SR transducer has a plug that is inserted after the removing the transducer. The first time I remove it I was a little apprehensive with thoughts of geysers and Three Stooges type antics, but it was pretty much a non-event.

Bruce,

Sounds like you have an impeller that is fouled, happens to me once or twice a summer. I have the same unit that you described and it came with a plug that replaces the sending unit. It's a little scary the first time you try to use it but in time you get used to it.
I keep a small bucket and sponge handy when I do this. Trick is to have everything handy and do a mental runthrough rather than just jumping in. Thing is to have the plug at hand, then as you unscrew the sending unit and pull it out imediately place your hand over the onrushing water. With your free hand ready the plug and remove your hand while simultaneously fitting the plug. take an old toothbrush and scrub the impeller claen. There is a tiny shaft that comes out allowing the trough that the impeller sits in to be cleaned, be sure to replace the impeller in the same direction that it came out in. Don't clean up yet when you replace the sending unit it starts all over again.

Have at it and good luck.

if it goes 2 when you go 5 it sounds like you just need to go about 15 to get the results you are looking for

Maybe it's set for leagues per hour! Let's see... 1-2 leagues would be 3-6 knots.
Sounds about right.

Just had the same problem. Got a new gauge last year and it worked fine. This season, it was showing about 2 knots for full speed with motor. Called company and they told me how to adjust.

First make sure send is ok and spinning. If you push the button on the face you will see it say cabrate. you have to set a factor to increase it or decrease it. I used a gps to get actual speed over ground. I set mine for a factor of about +1.2. I kept changing factors until I matched the gps. Works fine now. Instructions can be downloaded off Signet site.

Good luck.
