I was intending to use my brother-in-law's GMC K3500 to move my fin keel Catalina 25 from the St. Louis area over to Lake Carlyle, but I just found out that the transmission went south and so now I need to find a tow vehicle. An internet search only results in moving vans, and Lowes and Home Depot trucks don't have hitches. The local sailing store, St Louis Sailing Center, has a boat transportation hotlink on their website but has no information when you click on it. I'll contact them by phone tomorrow but was hoping someone might have any more options that I haven't thought of.

I've had this boat since 1995 and have been lurking on this website since soon after, I never thought my first post would be about a stinkin truck!

The problem with rental vehicles is, they will not allow you to tow anything over 3,000LBs. Also, with UHaul, you have to use towables that are compatible with their proprietory hitch.
Sometimes you can find regional truck lease companies that will allow heavy tows - but they usually have stringent insurance requirements.
I'd love to find a rental company that would make it easy to rent a truck - because as much as I love my GMC 2500 4X4, I don't like the cost of owning it.

I just went through this when I bought Kaija. I found it impossible to find a suitable tow vehicle to rent. The best advice I got on this forum was to contact an RV dealership. I found one that towed the boat to its new home for half the cost of any of the boat haulers I contacted. It was during the winter however so that might have contributed to their availablility. Worth a try

Have you seen U-ship? I haven't used it personally but like the idea. Apparently you put a post that you need your boat hauled from A to B then shippers or transporters bid on hauling your boat. Each bidder has comments and feedback so after reading that you can choose to accept an offer. May be worth a try?

My suggestion is to call my friend Jon Duer who owns Great Lakes Rigging Company. He delivers Mumm 30s for many people for Key West Race week. Call him at 440-346-2651. He will give you a fair price.
