Hi All, I have a bunch of old, but still good, line off the little Newport that I want to use again. It is green and dirty but still good. What can I wash it in??? I was thinging about stuffing it in a mesh laundry bag and throwing into the wash, what do you think? Cheers.
A little bleach water soak will help. You can't do this every day, mind you, but once a season for about an hour will clean them up. I think the ratio was 1 or 2 ounces per gallon. The wash Idea might work too. Most likely, so will woolite.
Then again, the little newport isn't going to be sitting at the dock for all to see - so green line shouldn't be all that big a deal.
Hey Duane, how do you like the new boat? I just put the lines in a net bag and put them in the wash. I took before pics and will post both the before and after. Cheers.
I just use a little laundry detergent in a bucket with some water and put the lines in to soak. Agitated things with a stick a bit, let sit awhile more, rinsed with the hose and they cleaned up pretty well.
Every couple of years, whenever the lines look like they could use a bath, I toss them on the washer with regular laundry detergent. They come out a tangled mess, but very clean. I've heard of using mesh bags to reduce the untangling time, and some sort of faberic softener to improve the 'hand' of old lines.
Depending on your household washing machine, which you may NOT want to break for the sake of family harmony, bring them to a launderette store near you. Stick 'em in a mesh bag or even a pillowcase.
WOW. I had all the lines off anyway becasue I thought they were too hard and dirty to use. One trip in the washer and they are bright, soft and pliable. Thanks for the tip... Ed
I'm not sure I'd put them in my washer, but I've washed lines in my bathtub many times. Let them soak a while in water to get any salt out then you can change the water & wash with regular detergent. Make sure to rinse them well afterwards.
I used the mesh bag and that kept them together. I talked to a guy today that has a 40' Gulfstar and he takes his line to a laundry mat and washes them in a front load washer because there is nothing to get hung up on. Cost a couple bucks.
