Ill be leaving to go south next Sunday and will be in the South Sound for a week. Sunday to Sunday. Does anyone have and ideas about where to go or things to do other than the normal state parks, McMiken, Jarrel Cove, Eagle Island perhaps some gunkhole that one of you locals know about and would like to share. Are there any events or town BBQs going on in that week. Local farmers markets etc ? John ! Doug ! how about some ideas. Good crabing spots or somwhere warm enough to swim and clean the boat bottom. Do any of you want to get together ? Ill be stoping in Olympia at least one night. Where is the best spot there. Does Percival landing alow overnight stays or do I need to go the A dock at the big marina.

Leaving this Sunday? We're not getting out for anothe week, so looks like we'll miss you. Percival is a great place to stay overnight. Easy walk from there to the Farmer's Market or just about anything else in town. As far as swimming- we always like jumping in of the hook or bouy at Cutts/ Deadman's Island off of Kopachuck.

Olympia's Lakefair is this week, 17th - 21st. Which means that a lot will be happening around Percival Landing, including boats docking, so tie-up space will be at a premium. The Lady Washington will be in Olympia the 24th - 27th. I think giving people tours ($3/adult, $2/senior and students, $1/children or $7/family) and rides ($40/adult, $20/children).

I've had good luck crabbing at McMicken Island (rock crabs 6.5" - 7" size) near the island as opposed to the Hartstine shore. On minus tides I've just waded in and picked them up. Haven't found a legal Dungeness in the South Sound yet.

I'm planning to be out sailing the 20th - 23rd. Still having trouble convincing my wife this would be fun, so I might be solo. Probably spend a night at McMicken, but other than that the itinerary is open.

Hey Doug,
Looks like we'll have some minus tides this weekend. Making more detailed plans (why plan early when you can wait 'til the last minute). I'm looking at going to Longbranch on Saturday to see if the Chowder House is open for biz, then Sunday going to catch the Wyckoff Shoal at low tide (10:21 AM, -1.9) to see if I can dig a few clams, maybe pick up some oysters. Then over to Penrose, look for you there. Monday back to McMicken, see how the crabs are doin'. Tuesday, back into Oly.

John: Sounds good to me but I havent seen the chowder house at Longbranch open in years. Do they have new owners and let me know if they are open. Lets see what is that Felucy bay??? Use to have fuel there to but that went away too. Ill be at Penrose LATE. Got to take the mother inlaw to the airport Sunday AM, and then down to Tacoma to head out.

Doug, I just looked at the Longbranch marina website and it said the Chowder House was opening under new management (but there was no 'last revised' date on the web page), so we'll see. Yup, Filucey Bay.

High tide at the Narrows is 5:41 PM (12.2'), Low at 10:22 PM (7.5'). Not much variance, but I don't know how the current runs with a 5 foot difference.

John: The Narrows are always the same. 30' to 40' whirl pools and the same in up swells. My wife hates it but we always hug the west shore and its not to bad. Nasty at the south end but we will have a week to forget it once we are through. Ill be heading through on a flood tide and as you said not a big one at that so perhaps this time King Neptune will be kind. LOL. Ill have to check out Filucy bay and the chowder house. Ruth and I use to drive down there for a nice quiet weekend meal. Thanks for the information. Will your wife be making the trip too. Ruth would enjoy that.

Hey Doug!

What happened on going north!! Just came back from a great six week trip through the islands darn near up to the tip of Vancouver Island with a bunch of folks from Gibson Marina. The leader was a couple on a Catalina 27, and the oldest couple was on a Nunsuch 36 which they purchased two months prior. Ages? Wife was 82 and the husband was 85!!

These folks love to travel, and they actually spent another two weeks gunkholing after we left to attend an Alberg Rondevous in the Gulf Islands!

Planning on joining them next summer! Are you interested???

Careful with the tides at Penrose. We motored in once with less than a foot under the keel. The floats at the park can dry with low tides.

Have you tried Hope Island, located west side of Squaxin and Harstein Islands. It has mooring buoys on the south end and west side of the island. Also, a favorite of mine is Falucie Bay, just west/southwest of McNeil Isle. It is very peaceful there. There is a very small general store there on shore, and a public dock. Have fun !

Thanks River: Yes I know the spot you mentioned. Ruth and I spent a night at Hope 8 years ago with our old C-22. I remember the oyster barges passing and the boat spining around to stay with the tides. I remember Squaxin and Harstine and the mast we lost trying to lower it and go under the Hartstine island bridge. We had a wonderful time and now we are going to do it again. We are both getting excited to see the old places and find some new. With 8 years of experiance under our belts we plan to have a lot more fun. Ill be sure to take pictures to share.

River do you have a boat? If so keep in touch. Several of us on the board are in the south sound area. I would realy like to plan a get together at some time. If you dont have a boat yet let us know and perhaps you would like to crew one weekend.

Doug,
I think I have my wife talked into it, as long as we don't sail much, she'd rather motor.

If you want something interesting to do, go in Hammersly Inlet to Shelton. It's like running a river. I've only done it once. We really had to pay attention to the charts. Sandbars and such to avoid. My sailing buddy had a placemat from a Shelton restaurant with a drawing of the Inlet on it. It turned out to be the most accurate chart we had!

Thanks "other Doug" ! We'll watch the depth around Penrose. Might end up anchoring out, we're due for some minus tides this weekend.

Penrose Point has plenty of moorings on the East side also. There are only 3 or 4 on the west side across by the spit. If you have a swinger you can crank it up and go into the dock on the west by the state campground. There are showere a small 1/4 mile loop trail nature walk, Berries, a nice beach and picknic area.

Douglas: In answer to your question...yes, have a boat. Just purchased a 2002 C250. We are planning our first voyage next week, probably leaving approx. July 23 or 24 for a few days R & R. The "new boat" adventure has been more of a nightmare. The boat is nice but the dealer was LOUSY!(The stories I could tell!) Very poor customer service...which is complicated when one is not the most experienced sailor around, such as I. Hoping the outlook from here on is bright. Anyway, we're not sure yet where we'll end up...probably south sound somewhere. Now that I've discovered the forum, it will be comforting to have comrades to exchange info. and stories with...and maybe meet on the water.

River Harley: What did you name your boat. It would be great to see you on the water. We will be starting off at Penrose Point late Sunday, then on to McMiken, Jarel cove will be next and from there we are open. We want to spend at least one night at Percival landing for a night on the town (Olympia) and perhaps another night at Filucy bay on the way home. I want to explore Totten inlet and have a look at Deer harbor. I havent been there or into Eld inlet before. Even Shelton is a possability. I have two or three days mid week to just play with ideas. SOOOOOOOO hope we see you. Oh John Ruth says hello to Tatiana and hopes she will come.

Doug,
Unless she changes her mind 'tween now and tomorrow morning, Tatyana will be on board. So we'll see you Sunday at Penrose.
