I have just acquired a 1980 Johnson Saildrive OB and am wondering about the oil/gas mixture. I am gussing 50:1 or 12oz oil to 5 gals of gas......would this be correct??
I've had two Johnson Sailmasters one, a 1990 six hp used 100/1 mixture and the 1993 9.9 hp used 50/1. I suppose it is safe to go with 50/1 until you contact Johnson and find out which they reccommend.
My understanding is that the 100:1 was an experiment to reduce smoking, it caused accelerated engine wear and that there was a Tech Note from OMC that instructed that all engines regardless of age or what was written on the engine should return to 50:1
I also have a Johnson 9.9 and mix a 45 - 1 ratio. My plugs do not get oil covered and it only smokes at initial startup. I would rather see a bit of smoke than a bill to repair. 12 ounces is a bit light. 14 ounces would do the trick.
West Marine makes a great mixture bottle with oil-level marks to help mix precise ratios of oil to gas. Price is $4.99. I use it all the time. Go to West Marine on line and in the search box type "oil-to-gas mixture measure."
