Yesterday, I greased the winches on "Yee Ha!. I bought a Lewmar winch maintenance kit with some grease, oil, a brush, and an instruction book. According to the book, my number 7 winch should have had a set of bearings inside. But my winch has no bearings at all. There's just a post that the winch sits on. Is that the way the original winches are constructed? My boat is an '83.
Here's the website for Lewmar's page that shows the exploded views of the 6, 7, & 8. You'll see that these three winches are pretty similar in many respects. http://www.pyacht.com/LWS678.htm One of the main differences between the 7 and the 8 is that there is a bearing race in the 8. So, Lewmar may have used the same instructions for both.
