I am not surprised at all. It was so windy on the 27th, Anything could have happened in the sound. We were planning on a trip to Lopez IS on the 27th returning on the 28th. We scrapped that with forecast westerlies of 25-30. Been calm and beautiful since.
Yeah, theoretically we were going to go up to the San Juans for Memorial Day Weekend, but after the scare we had a few weeks ago with high winds & seas, Rita felt more comfortable taking another short trip to Blake Island for an over-nighter (we still haven't spent a night on the boat). However, I managed to run a nasty little fever for a few days last week so we canceled those plans as well. Ended up working on the boat, figuring out how to reef, etc., and ended up with a small barbecue on Monday with a few friends. Since the weather got nasty on Sunday, I don't mind that we didn't go.
I'd say she was pinned not grounded. My best guesstimate goes as follows:
Motor died while site seeing. Couldn't switch filters fast enough, tried to raise sails, but by then it was too late. They moved the dinghy they were towing to port so they could escape? I would have risked losing it to the shore to protect the boat while I got some fuel going. And at the first sign of trouble IN THERE, I would drop a hook NOT try to raise sails, that been said you probably need a lot of chain!
