I have a 1987 Standard Rig. I think the standard forestay is 29 ft 10 inches.
Does anyone have any problems with opening the anchor locker with the CDI FF4 furler installed just as it came out of the box? How about visability?
The reason I ask is I broke my forestay last year and damaged the Profurl Furler that came with the boat. It looks like the Profurl had link plates added to the bottom of the drum to raise it higher. The plates are about 11 inches. I assume the forestay was shortened also. I don’t race (nor do I cruise for that matter). so I don’t need it lower.
If I replaced my forestay and furler with a CDI FF4 am I going to have problems with the locker or visability? Has anyone raised the furler using link plates? The CDI manual make one mention of link plates but does not get into specifics.
If I keep the Profurl and replace the forestay, should the new forestay be shortened? If I buy from Catalina Direct a new one is $102.00 I am pretty sure it is 29ft 10 inches. My marina quoted me $220.00 for a forestay. I didn't ask if it was custom made.
This is only my second season with the boat and all of this is confusing.
Thanks, Ed

I have the CDI furler ( go for the ball bearing model) and have it very close to the deck. Nothing was added to raise it. The anchor locker is far enough back that there is no concern ( standard rig 1983). There is some visibility problem looking under the sail, but not terrible. I do not think on the standard rig you have much room at the top to move the drum up. I have had no problems with the setup.
1/4" Note that I do have an extension toggle under my forestay but only because the new forestay was a bit short. I am sorry the bungie hook and tag are in the way.
I've read where some boats with anchor rollers installed have had problems with anchors hitting the drum as the anchor moves over the bow. Made me think about the locker.
Frank the new forestay was a bit short? Did you buy the forestay from Catalina Direct?
I've done some reading on the Profurl web site. They claim in most cases the forestay is not affected by installing the furler.
I did buy it from CD. There is no getting around the truism that a rigger really needs your old one to get it right. I never mentioned it to CD, just bought a toggle and moved on.
The ProFurl does not make or require the forestay to be shorter. The same turnbuckle is used at the bottom. The link plates only extend the drum higher.
I have a 23 year old CDI furler and the DDS on my dock has the newer flexfurl CDI unit... neither have problems with access to the anchor locker..."don't over think" go sail
Thanks Stu I just found that out myself yesterday when I unscrewed the link plates and pulled the stay right out of the furler. I'm having a new stay made by a local rigger for about 100.00
Hi Val thanks for the encouraging words. We are just a little east of you in Speonk, but we sail in Peconic Bay.

Truisms are not always true I found a local rigger and gave him the forestay and the turnbuckle. Went out last night and after piecing all the extrusions together I started to screw the turnbuckle on the threaded stud and .... uh ohhh the stud is smaller than the turnbuckle. Arrrrgh!! It's back to the rigger tomorrow. He will make me up another head stay. Another day on the hard.
But Frank your earlier reply last fall was very true. Taking apart and putting back the Profurl was very easy. I was very apprehensive before coming here to the forum for help.
The rigger saved me big bucks. Not one part needed to be replaced. He bent a little piece on the top extrusion and turned a spline upside down. I was good to go 'cept for the forestay.
Before I got help here and met this rigger I was looking at $1325 in labor plus $200 in parts. I figured I might as well buy a new CDI Flexible furler. But since it will only cost $100.00 for the new forestay I'm fixing the Profurl.
