It's a cruising vessel with a full keel and short waterline and will have all the attributes that label carries. Slow, but safe and having a comfortable motion.
Have you tried the cruising forum over on sailinganarchy.com ? Seems like there was a recent Island Packet thread over there.
My sister inlaw and her husband have a 2001 Island Packet 38. If the 31 is built anywhere nere what their's is, it is a beautiful boat. You won't win any races with it, but it is one solid craft. They spent 18 months in the Caribbean living on it and it is now kept in Ft. Meyers.
The one I'm looking at is a sweetheart, lovingly maintained. Equipped with an asymmetrical to keep from wallowing in light air. Exterior teak is relative: compared to another boat I recently looked at, a Baba 30, the IP hasn't much at all...
Compared to what you're used to, on Lake Superior, she'll feel like an ore boat. (I mean that in a good way... stable and straight-tracking through significant seas.) The cutter rig gives you some good flexibility, and she's built for blue water cruising. I agree with you--there's just enough teak trim to make her look yachty, but not enough to be a huge project. I looked hard for an IP-29 a few years back--their smallest model, no longer made... Their owners apparently like 'em! As holes-in-the-water go, IPs are good investments.
