Is there a best way to wash the fabric?

There are different fabrics, do you have the dreaded plaid polyester, the lovely corduroy, or the indestructible sunbrella? I would take the covers off just because a little time in the sunshine will work wonders for your foam, it will air it out and kill odors.

We have the dreaded plaid polyester. It actually looks like new, but being used, thought it would be nice to clean them without ruining them.

The polyester is only dreaded in that it takes some of we older folks into a time warp of shag carpet and over sized pine furniture. It is actually well suited for a boat. I would say anything short of a washing machine would be alright.

We'e not in love with the fabric but it is in great shape. There are lots of other things with the boat to fix or replace. We were thinking of trying a front load washing machine (no agitator) in cold water gentle cleaner and hang dry. Our concerns are shrinkage, deterioration and the vinyl bottom.

I would not put them in a washing machine. Food for thought, new cushions from Catalina are 12-14 hundred dollars and come with new thicker foam and much nicer materials. New covers from a local will run very high as well, 800 to a thou. If your upholstery really is in good shape it is worth a lot of money to you to treat it with care. And we all know that our boats will absorb all the money we care to throw at them. You will see on my pages that I replaced the corduroy on my 89 with custom covers of sunbrella, many of us have redone our upholstery but it is best to wait until hardware and hull issues are resolved.

I took my plaid cushions home, removed the covers, then soaked/handwashed them in the utility tub using laundry detergent.

I washed them in the yard w/ a hose and some 303 Fabric Cleaner - worked great!
