Derek, are you OK? How is Canyon Lake doing? I have seen the photos from the flood that broke through your dam a few years ago, how are things looking?
Hi Frank, So far we are doing fine on Canyon. The lake went up about 9 feet earlier this Spring and the Corps were close to closing the road into the marina (it floods at 920' - datum is 909'). It went down to only 1' above datum by last weekeend but will certainly be rising again with all the rain in the upper Hill Country. The saying goes that 1" rain in Fredericksburg (40 miles north of Canyon and on the same river) means a rise of 1' in our lake. The flooding in North Texas won't affect us at all - it's a different river system. The problem is that the soil is so thoroughly soaked with all the previous rain (we had 19" at the house in 3 weeks last month) the rain is not soaking in but just running off in torrents. At present we have a torrential downpour at home - probably about 4" -5" an hour and there is standing water all around the house.
I know how you feel Derek. We are trying to finish up building a new home northeast of Tulsa. We are in the process of downsizing and moving closer to Grand Lake where our boat is kept. The water in Grand is controlled, so it is only about 1'-2' above normal. However, the construction on our new home is just about at a standstill on the outside. The inside is almost complete, but left on the outside is installing the aerobic system, the front porch, the patio, the sidewalks, the driveway, and all of the other external finishing touches. We have been waiting almost 2 months just to have the siding painted. We have had rain 17 out of the last 19 days, and it may continue until Sunday or Monday of next week. Looks like we may be living an a hotel after we close on our current house. "When it rains, it pours..." literally
I never thought I'd be saying this. Please send your excess Texas rain here to Oregon where we are having a drought and our lakes are lowewr than normal.
According to the local weather shows we set a record night before last. We got 2.59 inches of rain in 24 hours. The next most was in 1904 at 2.57 in 24 hours. I can now see how people in the Pacific Northwest feel when they get long periods without seeing the sun.

I've seen more than that per hour, and over 7" in three hours in Chicago. That was the night before our wedding--the rehearsal dinner. Don't try to attach any meaning to that--the marriage was 35 happy years, till death did us part.
OH..I didn't mean that it was a lot. I have had more in other places as well. We have lived in Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit and Kansas City. I was showing how long it had been since that much rain fell so quickly on the date indicated. In fact, we have had so much rain that the mortgage company of the buyers of our home are requiring that we install a French drain because water was found in our heating ducts. We have been in the house 11 years and never had a problem till this year.
Oh.. and Dave, yeah, I know what you mean about Chicago. My wife and I went to the Crown Point, Indiana county fair one year where we had much more rain in a shorter length of time. They had real problems at the fair grounds and we felt lucky to get out safely. So we feel lucky in a strange sort of way, but it's still alot of rain for around here.
