Overloaded boat sinks, sends 15 into water at Lake Dillon SUMMIT COUNTY
An overloaded boat with 15 people on board sank in Lake Dillon on the Fourth of July holiday.
The Summit County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 8:20 p.m. while the 25-foot Catalina sailboat was sailing under full sail on the Dillon Reservoir.
The boat fell over on its side and took about two minutes to sink, according to deputies.
None of the people on board were wearing life jackets, but a bystander and members of a water rescue team were able to rescue all 15 people. They were taken to the Frisco Marina, where all refused medical care, but were warmed up using blankets.
Deputies say the boat is in about 40 to 70 feet of water and it is the owner's responsibility to retrieve it.

They can get him for the gas tank sitting at the bottom of the lake for starters. Not having enough life jackets would be two. Any other USCG or state violations would be the third. If he was boozin there's another one. They'll have a tough time getting him on overloading considering there isn't a capacity plate and the coast guard formula puts them somewhere around 12-14.
Then of course there is the stupid charge that you brought up....Really think about how tough it would be to get the boat to roll over. They couldn't have put 15 people on one side - that's near impossible. Inland lake no big waves (by big I mean 5-8 footers) They really had to work to get it to go over and then over so that 15 people fall of!!! That thing should pop back up in about 2 seconds.

I have had 6 adults onboard and the boat felt very sluggish. Considering nobody got killed, I am chuckling at the fact our boat is named by make/model. That is brand recognition my friends.
This brings a new meaning to "hold my beer and watch this"
15 people times an average weight of 150 lbs. is more than a ton which would in fact exceed the design capacity for a C25. 6 in the cockpit, 3 on each rail and 3 more below. Now imagine a good gust that puts a rail in the water. Everyone tumbles to the low side right? You have just moved more ballast that the keel is capable of supporting. Oh and the poptop was up!
A house boat capsized here two years ago. There were about 50 people on board and they were running side to side to make the boat rock. It eventually turtled. One person drowned - she was in the head and got stuck when the boat turtled.
15 people on a C25 could easily cause a roll-over.
They could not have been moving very fast. the report doesn't say they were drunk.

They probably increased the LWL a little!
