I recently temporarily received a 1996 Mercury 9.9M outboard for use with my dinghy dinghy while on vacation. The deal is that I have to get it running. I've got everything in order with the exception of the fuel filter which I need to change, however unlike their competitors, the darn American Motor companies don't post the manuals online.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the fuel filter size make model etc?

There are 2 real possibilities for the fuel filter. Some engines have a screen right before the fuel pump. On small evinrudes, you can see a large thumbscrew on top of the fuel pump. Or it has a small cartridge type filter. That will be inline before the pump. It could have both.

There is usually a screen on the pickup tube in the tank as well. If the tank is a mess, the screen in the tank usually plugs up, by design. What type of problems are you having?

Tom.

I use this first link a lot whenever I have any questions. It is a great forum filled with very knowledgeable folks:

This second site is a pretty good online supplier. If you have the model number you can find any part you need. What is also great about this site is that they provide parts diagrams.

Well, if it's a Mariner check this link. Even if it's not I'd call their 800 number and ask.

If the fuel filter is like the one on my 95' 8hp, 2 stroke, its more of a fine mesh screen which can be easily cleaned.

What's wrong with the outboard?

It won't start, presumable due to bad gas over the years, bad plugs etc. I want to start with a clean fuel system before I start messing with anything else.
