Well, my summer vacation plans are decided. I'll be sailing San Diego to Ensenada August 8,9. I'll get a slip at the hotel Coral marina. Karen and the kids are driving down and will be staying in the hotel Friday Aug 10, Sat the 11 and coming back on the 12. We'll do some day trips by land through Baja. The hotel Coral is a 4 or 5 star resort.
After they leave I'll continue and sail down to Puerto Santo Thomas. Its a sleepy fishing village about 65 miles farther south, with a planned stop at Punta Banda. I'll return to my slip in Ensenada and then back to San Diego August 18 or 19.
Anyone who wants to come, by land or sea, is welcome. If there is anyone who would like to crew for me on the boat, you are welcome, too.
That should be a great trip. Practicing for a future Baja-Ha-ha? Make sure you have contingency plans for the return trip if the weather becomes uncooperative.
If you're interested in exploring Baja, the 'Baja Nomad' forums are pretty helpful.
Its ON! Slip booked Aug 9 - 17. Hotel for Karen and the kids booked Aug 10, 11 (return home Sunday the 12). I'll be sailing home Saturday 8/18 and Sunday 8/19.
Come join me for some fish tacos, shots of Patron, Tecate chasers, and sunset sailing down south of Ensenada.
Should be about a 250 mile round trip and my most extensive venture into Baja.
Jim, Wish I could go with you, sounds like a blast. Are you stopping for lunch in Rosarito? About halfway down is La Media Casa which serves great baja style lobsters, but I don't recall if there's anywhere to pull in. I haven't been in Mexico for probably close to ten years.
The best fish tacos can be had at the fish market right at the north end of Ensenada where the highway turns east from the coast towards downtown. Our plan was always to eat the tacos made by the older ladies while we ogled the younger ones. The older ladies seemed to be more concerned about hygiene. If you smell bleach when you walk up, you're probably in good shape.
La Bufadora (the blowhole) at the southern extents of Ensenada on Punta Banda is worth a look although last time I was there it was completely commercialized. You used to be able to walk down to the blowhole w/o being molested by all the people trying to sell you stuff. Thirty years ago we used to camp on the bluff and maybe only see a dozen people all weekend, mostly gringoes like us. Hopefully from the sea it's a much nicer experience, like it used to be. There's a nice little cove just north of La Bufadora, kind of thumb shaped, that was great snorkeling, but I have no idea how well suited it is for anchoring, we always hiked down from the road. My next oldest brother tried his best to be drowned by a 4" abalone in one of the big tide pools. He stuck his thumb under it in about 10' of water thinking he'd just pop it off the rock. The abalone wasn't having any of that and sucked right down on his thumb. He finally popped it off by using his legs to push off with, but by that time, it was more survival than 'baloneyin'.
A stop at Hussongs is in order, it's the oldest continuously operating bar in the western hemisphere, and the first bar I ever walked into by myself at the ripe old age of 13. I'm pretty sure the Federale checking IDs at the front door was the same one last time I was there a few years ago as that first time in the early '70's. If it's open, head up to the veranda on the 2nd floor (staircase almost in the center of the building, it's not very obvious). If you're into more pop culture bars, there's a Senor Frog's right across the street, but other than killer margaritas and a great 2nd floor veranda, I can't really recommend it. Too many 16-18 year olds drinking for the first time.
