The mail lady delivered my new burgee that I ordered off the forum this morning. Went to the boat this afternoon and hoisted it up and proudly sported the new burgee out on the lake.

BTW; That's one well built burgee.

Ordered mine yesterday... (want to be appropriately dressed on arrival at Bimini!)
So we have Flags for the USA, Bahamas, Quarantine, and now the Assoc Burgee(to arrive soon)

We looked up info on flags to fly entering Bimini, Quarantine until passed customs then the Bahamas flag.

Even though I have navy background, I'm really not sure of the correct flag routines (especially as I was in the British Navy, not the US Navy!)

Anyone got a difinitive flag etiquette link to share.

Paul

The Burgee was one of the main reasons I joined this association over a year ago and it still looks good. I got to be honest, I didnt know at first if top was bottom or vs. I lucked out.

Paul don't feel bad. I was a Chief in the US Navy and I don't know most of it. Of course I did spend all my time in the engineering spaces so maybe that explains my deficiencies but I should probably just blame it on the quantity of beer consumed between then and now.

Ordered my burgee day before yesterday. Sailed yesterday, very light wind and lots of waves from powerboats. went to eat, then we went back out and anchored for a fireworks show put on by a waterpark/campground on the lake. Had a great time. going back out for a few hours today, then we drop the mast for a haulout Wed. to fix the keel trunk leak.

I proudly fly the burgee of this association, the San Diego All Catalina Association, and the Cortez Racing Association (the racing-only yacht club I belong to).

And the US Flag on the stern.

Jim, everytime I see your boat with the spinny clean set and pulling, I'm envious.

Back to the subject... if you have several flags/burgees to fly, what's the scoop?

Well I have this association burgee on the port spreader.

If I'm racing in a CRA event or All Catalina event I put the appropriate burgee on the starboard spreader.

My class flag goes on the backstay (except I usually use my antenna).

Since CRA is my yacht club I also have their sticker on the transom.

I guess what you should do is line them up on the starboard spreader, with the important one on top, but I like flags on port and starboard to help show the wind.

The spin is so much fun and the boat performance really improves. Get a used one - you can fly it without a pole and without any expensive gear, just 2 blocks and2 sheets, you can make one of those ATN Tackers for $8 if you have roller furling and a couple spare parts laying around.

It is also good exercise.

Oh yeah, one of my next projects is going to be making a battle flag. I want a big white flag with a celtic knot in red.

Indiscipline is a song from King Crimson about obsession. The album is named Discipline and the album cover is a celtic knot.

Either that or a big 517 on a white flag (my favorite number).

The battle flag is flown before and after a race on the forestay.

If you're interested in having a custom burgee created, check out these folks. They did one for me - it's first class in terms of craftsmanship, materials and accuracy of design.

Thanks Dave, for a Brit in USA that was very informative.

(Of course, the chapter online doesn't seem to mention boats! )
