I am looking to reinstall all of the teak on my boat this weekend. I am looking for advise on the areas to consider sealing when installing. The holes are the obvious areas that need sealed. I am concerned about water leaking behind the wood into the cabin. I am under the school of thought that I want minimal sealant. I do want to make sure I keep the water out.

The PO had so much caulking that it was holding water at the foot of the opening.

I fully caulk my teak so that water cannot penetrate behind it. (cault fully top to bottom) If the PO on your boat had left an opening at the top and had a water dam at the bottom, indeed, that's a problem.

How did you finish the teak? Oil, Cetol, varnish?

I applied finish to the bottom areas of the teak to help keep moisture from wicking up and prematurely degrading the finish.

I used Cetol, and I finished the back with as many coats as the top. On other boats I have owned, I have only sealed the holes and never had a problem with water getting behind since I finish the back. Of course the opening poses another issue. I am not really worried about water getting behind, just into the cabin.

Cetol here... works fine, lasts long time. There are more choices on color, finish available now.

Regarding caulk, I ran a bead on the backs close to the top and sides of pieces, and put a dollup on the screw holes. I left the bottoms unsealed so any surprise intrusion could escape and a little air could get in. I also finished the backs of the pieces, as others have mentioned. (Cetol for me.) You didn't mention what you're doing for oil or finish--whichever you choose, do the backs too. (They'll last a long time out of the sun.)

Dave,
Thanks for the advise. I did as you suggested. I also did as many coats of Cetol on the back side of the teak.. I will post some pictures tomorrow of the finished product. I am really happy with the sealing job.
