"Flowery Branch"...What a great name for a town! I just googled earth Flowery Branch and there's a very nice looking lake and marina close bye. I'm from a small town on Lake Michigan so I have an appreciation for small towns.
I'll probably hate myself for this sometime this winter, but two days this past week I have gone to the lake. Temp 102, humidity a million. Three or four of us have ended up sitting around the air conditioned marina office telling sailing lies. Too old to sail around in circles in a convection oven.
I'm a little surprised by all the "records" being set in the South last week... I recall a couple of decades ago when the NYC area had two or three days where the high-to-low averaged over 100--the high was something like 114. (You wouldn't wanna be in a Manhattan subway station then...) When the low gets below 80 around here, it's not that hot. Thursday in Mystic was around 94 with a dew point (seemingly) of about 94--you could barely see across the river--ugliest weather I've seen here.
I think I have you all beat hands down. I am on a Govt sponsored "vacation" approx 9000 miles from Wa st. It is 100 at night and only 122 during the day. The funny thing I have noticed here. When you get into a parked car, it is no hotter than outside.
I think, much like boiling water has an absolute temp, so do cars.....at least at sea level.
I just keep my feet in water as much as possible. Spent today on a sandbar in a half a foot of water, a few cold beers, good friends .... beats the heat every time!
Last week I was on a cruise boat in the Meditteranean. Some of the places we visited in Italy and then in Greece it was very hot, close to 100F. But the humidity was lower than back in Virginia, so it did not feel as bad as when wee returned and hit the hot days last Monday and Tuesday that were around 95-98F , high humidity. Today, it has cooled down a bit with highs not to go above 90F. I was sailing last Friday night and plan to be on the water again, this afternoon.

Here in South-Central Texas we would welcome those Florida temps in our Summers. Normally at this time we're experiencing days of 100+.We raced yesterday in 98 degrees with 7 knot winds and a humidity out of sight...(took 2 bullets).

And here we are, wondering whatever happened to global warming. Its been very autumnal here. Al Gore was here telling us oil producers that we're contributing to the downfall of civilization. That humming he heard in the back-ground was not air-conditioning, it was the furnace kicking in. Its August, but I'm already fondly day-dreaming about our annual winter trip to Maui. We had our two weeks of summer, now its back to preparing for winter.
Two solid weeks plus of 102-104 "official" highs, car temp guage regularly hitting 106-109. Saw 110 yesterday at 4pm. With the added bonus of 60%+ humidity.
Heh... I'm living on the beach in NW California "the land of eternal Winter". A 75 degree day here is headline news. 'Heat Wave Bakes Area'... accompanied by photos of an ice cube melting on the sidewalk.
