Paul, If you're looking for an el-dirt-cheapo sextant, a Davis Mark 3 is a pretty good place to start. I found mine in a thrift shop for $15 (well, actually my mom found it, but same-same). I've seen them on Ebay for about the same price, and I found a Davis Mark 25 for $50. The handle on the back was broken, but that was quickly fixed with some epoxy. I now have about half a dozen sextants including a Russian Naval one I bought from a guy in Vladisvostok a few years ago.
As far as DIY, I started building basic quadrant some time ago, got the frame built, and the angle field printed out on vellum using AutoCAD, still need to make the vernier frame and put the whole thing together. I figured I could get about 1/4° resolution (15 minutes or so) when it was done. You should be able to build a similar sextant if you'd like. If you're looking for a good book on building ancient navigation tools, pick up a copy of Latitude Hooks & Azimuth Rings. It's got 18 projects inside to show you how to buid a number of different navigation tools of the ancient world, including an octant, which is very similar to a sextant except it measures 45° instead of 60° like a sextant.
Thanks for those links David. I was looking at the DIY option simply for the price break, but your ebay hint will do the trick. Books look good too! Thanks.
