For the past 2 months the wind have been light and variable, especially so just as the wed night races start so I have not really had an opportunity to do much racing. Not really into floating around for 2 hours.

Today was the first day I flew the new Doyle asym (APR 90) in anything above eight knots of breeze. This morning around 6 am the wind was an offshore(east) blowing 15 steady with gusts up to 18, and waves 0-1 foot, so I decided to fly the kite. I fly the asym from a pole set to windward, with a topping lift, and pole trim leads set to the pole from blocks on the bottom of the first set of stanchions to hold the pole off the fore-stay; and to bring the tack just windward of center.

The first set was to starboard, the kite launched from the bag on the port side perfectly and filled with a crisp snap. As the helm adjusted and the sheet trimmed the boat immediately powered up, and boy did it. My speedo transducer is currently in the shop getting a new paddle wheel, did not have my GPS on, but I would have guessed I had to been doing a steady 8-10 knots (or more). As we passed through the fishing fleet (tournament day), there were several boats turning to cross us so I tried to maneuver and ended up over-steering to starboard a tad and began to broach. As we rounded up, I had the trimmer pop the tack line to release the pressure; this immediately stood the boat back on her feet. I then steered dead down-wind, gave the command to reel in the tack to position, headed slightly to the off-wind position as the spinnaker filled, and off we went again.

This had to have been the fastest and easiest broach recovery I have ever experienced as the event only took less than 20 seconds to be back underway. Even though gybing is slightly more complicated, I am completely sold on asymmetrical spinnakers, and highly recommend them for the Capri.
