I'm Nick, live on Long Island, NY and I just bought a 1977 Catalina 25. I'm new to recreational sailing around Long Island, but have experience with amateur race sailing on Luder 21's with my past life in the US Navy. This site has answered so many of my questions. I feel a bit nervous on this new venture and only hope to do it correct; So any help/words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
1. Go to your Profile (above) and create a "signature" that will automatically identify you and your boat (year, hull #, SR for Standard Rig, TR for Tall Rig, FK for Fin Keel, SK for Swing Keel, etc.) as you see on many posts on the forums. That helps us answer your questions.
2. Get the Catalina 25 Owners Handbook from Catalina Direct (http://www.catalinadirect.com/), a third-party supplier of many components and upgrades specifically for our boats. The handbook is mostly their catalog, but has lots of information and ideas, is the best $10 you'll spend on the boat, and includes free updates (with new prices, of course) every year.
3. Take it easy around the dock--as you may have guessed or figured out, the C-25 is a bit more to start and stop than the Luders.
4. Keep the questions coming here--everyone here has asked many and learned much, and we're all still learning! This is an amazing resource!
Welcome Nick, This site is an amazing place and we all felt as you do when we found it. There is one place that is even more important to you, it is your local dock. Your dockmates are sailing in your waters and will have a lot of local knowledge to give you. Have a great time here and a great time around the docks.
Jerlim, I currently have my C-25 in an Islip slip. I've been researching this site and absorbing as much information as possible. My C-25, needs some TLC, such as outside/inside cleaning, Teak maintenance, and updating to the latest technology/electronics.After reading the many posts, there is so much I want to do.I look forward to learning much and adding to this community as much as I can.
The Great South Bay is a perfect place for our boats, it's plenty big enough and has the ocean breezes Welcome to the Forum and enjoy, this site is such a treasure!
I read this forum almost daily. A wealth of information can be found here.
Also join the association. I think it cost 25 bucks a year. You get a subscription to Catalina's Mainsheet magazine, a few on line discounts and maybe a few other perks. It's not required to use the forum I just think of it as a donation. We C25 owners have a great site specific to our boats. You will find the links page very helpful when it comes time to repair or upgrade. I second Dave's suggestion to get the C 25 owners handbook. My wife bought it for me as a gift. I like the fact that it often explains how to use the new part you are buying. It's like having a salesman explain it to you. It's a hard cover loose leaf binder so you can update it every year.
Welcome aboard. I'm a local in Patchogue, moored at Dockside 500. Where in Islip do you moor? If I can be of any help just give a call. Retired and sail daily.
Thanks, it's nice to find local contacts. What is the best way to obtain your contact number? Any veteran advise would help on my new venture. I am currently at Long Island Yacht in Islip. I'm new to being a boat owner, but I am researching as much as my mind can handle. Any local advice would be much appreciated. I have just purchased the C25 manual from Catalina Direct, so hopefully, that will arrive soon. Any advice on the South Shore Sailing? I will be looking to obtain the necessary charts and some GPS/Depth equipment to keep me out of harms way.So many questions and tasks, with not enough time in a day.I look forward to this and I am really excited.
