I JUST PURCHASED AND INSTALLED A 250 LBS MOORING SETUP WITH 15 FT OF 1/2 INCH CHAIN AND 10 FT OF 3/8. QUESTION BASED ON THE SIZE OF THE SK C25 CLEATS WHAT SIZE PENDANTS WOULD I USE AND WOULD I GO TO THE BOW CLEATS.
IT SEEMS THE BOWEYE IS HARD TO REACH ON A REGULAR BASIS FOR ATTACHING TO THE MOORING.
IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE MOORING IS IN SHALLOW WATER IN THE OPEN SOUTHOLD BAY.
I use about 6' of 5/8" line on an 18" HD snubber (about 6 wraps around the snubber) . I attach via snapshackle, to the top of the chain - just under the mooring ball. The other end is attached via snapshackle to boweye. I either lie on my stomach on the deck to reach the bow eye to unshackle, or use my Zodiac.
I also use two dock lines from the handle on top of the mooring ball and run them through the bow roller to deck cleats.
I'm in about 20' of water, very windy area with a lot of Powerboat generated wake. If you want pictures, I can post them here after the weekend.
Ive been using 12 feet of 5/8" line with a bridle and two loops attached to both bow cleats for 18 years. Been through some rip roar'n storms without a hitch - no pun intended .
I also use galvenized swivels at every attachment point in my mooring system, from the anchor to the road attachemnt, to avoid tangles and eventual failure. I highly suggest them.
I used 5/8 for a few years with no trouble. It held a 25 foot lobster boat during a hurricane.
I switched to 1/2 because it would be easier to cleat. About 2 months later I came to the boat to find one separated and the other hanging my 1 strand! So I switched back to 5/8.
