Today was the first time in using allstate for 25 years that I got really pissed off at them As you may have read on another post, I am currently in negotiations on the purchase of an Ericson 32 (see it on Yachtworld.com, search for the one in Burnt store, florida) I sent a copy of the survey to Allstate. My agent said the underwriter isn't familiar with surveys done in Florida, only tennessee surveys. My surveyor is a fully accredided member of SAMS, is a former attorney, and does several hundred insurance surveys a year, especiall busy after hurricanes. The underwriter said they would sell me a policy, and then accept or reject the survey after I buy the policy. HUH? the agent's employee said that my survey did not have a one page summary, as this is what he understands, not a 15 page detailed survey. DOUBLE HUH? I'm sure he is a Billy Bob who only understands bass boat surveys in tennessee, and then only if they use small monosyllabic words. I'll call my agent on monday and tell him to contact a florida underwriter who can understand a detailed survey and give me an answer before I buy a policy. I guesse Allstate really isn't a boat insurance company, despite the many ads they put in sailing magazines. Or maybe I should contact a South Florida Allstate agent. Maybe call Boat US as I am a member for another opinion, but I did read the other thread on boat US. I really would like to use Allstate as I have a million dollar umbrella policy which would extend to the boat policy for added liability protection (good if you have a collision with a lawyer)
On Tuesday call Chuck Wasson (with Wasson and Assoc. in Largo Florida)at 727-392-4400. When I get in the office on Tuesday I'll get you the toll free. Chuck has access to several carriers and I've always had positive results with his group.
Frank, Welcome to the cross state boating fiasco quagmire. Your insurance will need to be written for the state it is in. I will never do business with Allstate after they "randomly" dropped my Fl homeowners policy after 5 claim-free years. I guess that is a rant for another forum.
The only insurance company that has been straight with me has been Progressive. I would check them out and see what you can do.
Time to go shopping... for the whole package. You might be pleasantly surprised. Talk to an independent agency about something like Chubb (the one insurance pros buy for themselves). As the BoatUS customers here have suggested, cheapest is not always best. In my area, Middlesex Mutual is the pros' choice, so it's mine too--home, car, boat, and umbrella. No claim experience to report... (Knocking on wood!)
I had Boat US in the late l980's. After Hurricane Hugo hit the Caribbean in 1989, Boat US cancelled ALL Caribbean coverage. We all had to go out and get (pay for) fresh surveys and find another (more expensive) company. However, I will add that, as far as I know, Boat US paid all claims, including mine, before withdrawing coverage.
