Our last time out we spent a pretty bumpy night hanging on a mooring ball. We get a fair amount of ferry and commercial traffic, and unless you get one of the "good" balls, you can expect a fair amount of large wakes to go through during the night. While both of us were able to sleep OK, there were a few times where it got pretty rough for a while, and I'd like to not have that happen again if possible.
David, I can't comment on the Magma product but thought I would relate how we overcame the rocking on my last trip to Catalina Island. We were moored at Descanso Bay, outside Avalon, which is a largely unprotected mooring field. There was no wind but a small swell was coming through and the time period between the swells was sufficient to initiate some pretty violent rolling. Finally about midnight I got up and raised the mainsail. It provided sufficient stability to overcome the rolling and pitching and we had a restful night after that. If the wind had been up that may not have been an option but in a calm situation on a strong mooring it worked beautifully. This is also one of the reasons it is a good idea to raise the main when yuo are motoring. It keeps the pitching and rolling to a minimum.
I use the roll preventors. I have 3 cones on each side, attached to an 8 lb mushroom anchor. I deploy 1 set of 3 from the spinnaker pole (or whisker pole). If your boat is rolling through 30 degrees, one set of 3 on the pole will cut it to 15.
15 is still alot so if my boat was rolling that much I'd drop in the second pair. Since I only have one pole, I simply hang the 2nd pair from a cockpit winch.
This will kill the rolling to about 5 degrees.
They work. Get them deep, on a pole, keep the anchor off the bottom.
