I loosen the forestay and then disconnect one of the legs on the split back stay by pulling the pin. That gives me enough slack to easily remove and/or install the forestay pin. I don't touch the shrouds.
Check the manual. As I recall, it suggests that the shrouds be loosened a couple of turns. Or maybe it was the dealer that told me that when I was being taught to raise and lower the mast...
It would be nice not to have to do that, so I will be watching this thread with interest to hear other folks thoughts and experiences.
Loosening the backstay and shrouds makes it easy to unpin the forestay. It is possible to unpin the forestay without loosening the shrounds but its not easy. I discovered a trick where you can attach a rachet style strap to the CDI furler & boat and rachet a little just enough so unpining the forestay is easy. I have the backstay tensioning system which makes loosening it a breeaze, but even with the backstay very loose, the shrouds back tension makes the forestay quite stiff, 4 turns makes it ok. The manual does mention that you should loosen the shrouds.
On another subject, Randy I received the latest data sheet from Edson for the Tiller to Wheel conversion kit and all prices. Would you like me to send this over if you want to post this info in the "Brochures and Manuals" section? I don't have your email.

I only loosen the backstay turnbuckle and then remove one of the split backstay legs to un-step the mast (at the triangle by the backstay turnbuckle). This allows the forestay pin to be pulled easily. I just count the turns on the backstay and then reverse the process when stepping the mast again.
