Always interesting reading in this forum. If was in a regatta recently and a friend of mine was crew. I ran to and from the foredeck getting the spinnaker ready and then straightening up after rounding the marker, knee pads are on order for next year. (lots of fun, pictures on sailchelan.com /regatta). So I am wondering, if the spinnaker pole was shorter and stayed hooked to the mast, with a mast up/downhaul would that affect the handling and/or performance of the spinnaker? The idea is to operate the spinnaker from the cockpit as much as possible.

You would still need to leave the cockpit to gybe.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking other than what would happen if you shorten the pole. Generally speaking shortening the pole will really mess with sail shape, plus allow the pole to go inside the triangle(deck, mast, forestay) as the boat sails higher. That would be a recipe for disaster - you think you might be able to hold the guy and keep it back, but as wind pressure increases, one slip of the guy and you are toast.

If you can provide more details as to what you are struggling with I'll be glad to chime in
Since being on the bow is pretty inefficient when it comes to boat speed, there are many ways that people rig so that they don't have to go up there all the time.

How do you rig for the kite? Where do you launch from? What type of car adjustment do you have?

There are definitely ways to rig so that your time on the bow becomes almost nil.

And as the guy moves forward it loose its MA. They need to learn to pull the pole from the mast and do a dip gybe then push it back out and reconnect it.
