I took the tiller/rudder off the boat today. Anybody else have their rudder on backwards all season? Yep, stuck it into the head the wrong way when I mounted it in the spring. The strange part is that I thought she handled just fine! Wonder what it'll be like next year?
My eight year old would say it best DDDUUUHHHHHH!

Now, explain how you can mount it backwards? The pintles are only on one side of the rudder, and the box that the rudder fits into on the tiller looks like it'd only go on one way too? I'm confused.
Lets review a bit here to confirm... you had the thinner edge forward and the thicker edge aft? You had the lower offset portion aft instead of forward?
If I'm not mistaken, that rudder is supposed to be a balanced rudder meaning that a portion of it aligns forward of the pintle center line. Reversing it would make it very unbalanced. It should have caused serious helm torque.
I actually thought the tiller to be rather comfortable in my hand. Go figure. I wish I could put the boat back in the water just to see what it feels like but, I'll wait til April.

I was tested once in about 8th grade... Heard many decades later that the school called my parents about my score... They never told me what it was--it went to their graves. So, the question I'm left with is, did I overachieve despite those indicators, or grossly underachieve??
The one thing I wondered after joining was: How smart is it to give somebody ~ $50/year (don't recall exactly) just so they can give you a card that says you're smart? I never renewed but I still have the card - somewhere. . The magazine was interesting sometimes but not worth $50/year.

If that's the worse thing you do in your boating career, you are in fine shape...don't worry about it.

I still feel that yanking with all my might on a line that I forgot to attach to a deck cleat, then falling off the dock is far dumber simply by virtue of the fact that I had just chastised a stinkpotter for bad seamanship, in front of a large group of friends. But if you want to be the winner, that's okay.

Oh Yeah it's possible, I went up to check on my boat last weekend and looked at the installation of the blade. It certainly appears if you turn the rudder around the holes still line up. Tough to get it swung up if it is a kick up rudder though. John's blade was mounted backwards, not the head, you really have to see the whole assy to picture how this can happen. The blade is mounted on the lower portion of the head. One bolt for attachment and a breakaway pin in the other hole. IMHO You win John
