Our 3 gallon propane tank needs to be replaced. It is a 1999 tank and does not have the "overfill protection" valves that all tanks, including BBQ tanks, went to a number of years ago. Now the refill places will not fill our tank and the propane/tank dealers say they cannot update the valve of anything smaller than a 5 gallons tank. Anyone know the source of a replacement tank?? I've seen the whole locker/tank setup for sale ($$$) but not just the tank.
We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.
Randy I went through this a while back. I ended up taking my tank to the local LP place and they ordered and replaced the old type valve with the newer type. Believe the cost was $45 including a refill. Who knows they may even have SS valves now.
You can buy a standard 3 gallon bottle for around $35 or so. I've also read that the OPD valve thing is only for BBQ's and doesn't apply to other applications. I'd imagine selling that to the the propane guy might be a bit of a challenge, but they should know the rules.
I looked up the law and it applies to all 4-40 lb propane tanks, not just the BBQ ones. I'm going to try a local Seaward service place tomorrow to see if they will change out the valve. Otherwise I will buy the new Seaward tank which should fit.
Well, only one company in town still does that work and they are not "staffed" for it right now. I guess that means they are looking for a minimum wage person to hire. They said to call back in a couple of weeks. They said about $35.
I found a place online that sells the new OPD valve for our tank so I am considering that too. It is $25. Trouble is they also sell the tools to take the old valve out and a new one in. The tools are about $70! Not sure if I can do the job without them.
Finally, since the tank is almost 10 years old I may bite the bullet and buy a new one from Seaward. My understanding is that the new one is an inch higher but still fits. New tank is about $60. I am leaning to this option.
