I'm in the middle of my first winter project (and it hasn't even snowed yet). I am installing a stereo. Following some earlier suggestions, I am placing it on the aft side of the sink / stove cabinet. I'm not sure if I should tap into the power that feeds the electic start for the butane stove. The wires are there. Is there a potential problem with this? Mike
You can get a 6 or 12 fuse panel from west marine. I bought the car fuse style .
I double sided taped it to the ceiling in the back next to the battery . bring power to the fuse panel , then add the stereo . then you ll have space for anything new you want.
The car fuse style only goes so low , If the stereo has a smaller fuse than the car style , put in a hot bus bar .
take the power ,after your main shutoff switch . that way everything gets shut off with one switch .
My stereo came with the correct fuse and holder already attached to it. Most I've seen do. A normal stereo only draws a minimal amount of power. I did exactly what you said and attached the stereo power wire to the stove ignitor wire. I use shrink tubing and soldered the wires together. If it were a motor or a heater or something that draws a lot a amperage, I would worry about it frying something, but so far, my wiring and my boat work just fine.
John, did you attach the wire that allows the stereo a continuous power source. It maintains settings, time etc.. I was wondering if it would cause the battery to drain if I was away from the boat for a week.
You are exactly correct. On my boat, the stove ignitor power goes thru the accessory switch on the panel. My boat stays on the hard without power attached. If I leave the accessory switch on, even tho the radio is turned off, it will eventually (slowly) drain the battery. I just turn off the switch when I put the boat away. I lose the presets like the clock and station, but, that's life. An alternative would be to keep the boat attached to a charger.
Mike, lots of options. Perhaps you can call the manufacturer of each to see if any potential problems. They should have a technical support person. I must say, I love my stereo especially FM Sunday Blues. Dont play DVD's much however. Make sure you get one to plug in a IPOd. Good luck Steve
