We spent a week on San Juan, walked the docks, and thought how nice it would be to retire there in 20 or so years. So we talked to a realtor and went into severe sticker shock! Ohmigod, the prices!

So, my question, is there something in the area more affordable? We do not need waterview or waterfront, we just need a dock in a reasonable driving distance. We want to buy a lot or small place now and use it for a summer retreat. We would like to be out away from the Seattle sprawl. Maybe Bellingham, Anacortes, Whidbey Island, etc?

Can you locals advise?

Realy ! I would recomend a few places but then that would be creating competition for myself and drive up prices. Just teasing. Ruth and I live in the Tacoma area and we havent found any deals. we are looking at retirment in the next few years and are cosidering Canada. We would like to own our own slip. Everything on or near the water is owned or tied up. The only exception being the echonomicaly depresed areas on the peninsula where logging has gone bust. Everything else is 30 miles from the water. You might try the Hood Canal area.

Hood Canal is stunning, but not the best place to sail. Bellingham and Whidbey are good choices/ Also make sure to check out Port Townsend on the West side of the Sound. Sequim and Port Angeles are very inexpensive, but they are out there a ways. Sequim a fast growing area of retired folks.

For an inexpensive place to live, and have a place to sail, look at Powell River on the coast of BC!! You are almost in the back door of Desolation Sound, three ferries away from Vancouver, and the prices of housing is right!!

Looks better every time I use the harbor!!
