Back in March I installed a Raymarine Autohelm 2000 interfaced to a Garmin GPSMAP76. It had the following "glitch"...
"WARNING: The only glitch is that the Raymarine Autohelm 2000 Plus only recognizes waypoints with a MAXIMUM of 4 (yes only four) characters in their name. If the waypoint has a 5th character (blanks included) it ignores it and won't switch to the new waypoint. Basically, if you're heading for land, rock, etc. and you've plotted a waypoint to change your heading before landfall, it MUST be named with only 4 characters. If you enter a 5th character (e.g. a space) the autopilot will ignore the new waypoint, won't sound the alarm, and will continue to steer you through your "greater than 4 character" waypoint straight onto landfall, grounding, mishap, etc. Oh well the world is not a perfect place."
I wrote to Garmin about the problem in April. I suggested a fix that would send the numeric sequence of the waypoint instead of the name, and asked them to include it in their next software update for the GPS. THEY ACTUALLY DID IT! I was surprised.
They added the following feature (from Garmins website): "Added a Setup NMEA output item to the Interface setup page menu when the Serial Data Format is set to NMEA. This allows setting the following for the NMEA output: the precision of the minutes field for lat/lon, the waypoint identifier format, and which groups of sentences to transmit. These settings allow compatibility with a wider range of NMEA-driven products including some older marine autopilots. "
I tried the Autohelm and Garmin GPSMAP76 with the latest software patch (2.09) and it worked great!
Thank you Garmin.

You might want to post this at the current autopilot topic at the C25 forum. I hope you don't mind, but I used your photos from your installation for an explanation.(I did give you credit.)
