What a perfect day to say goodbye to Daylight Saving Time, to the lake after early church along with our daughter in for the weekend from St. Louis with a friend to attend another friend's wedding Sat.
Sunny skies, temp in the 68-72 range, and wind 8-10. Well, someone forgot to give the forcast to the wind wizard! It turned out to be 10-15 with gusts to 25, and whitecaps dancing everywhere. We had the TR main full up with the working jib. It was fabulous! Almost buried the rail twice sailing up wind toward the dam, but she never fully rounded up on me. Had a great run back and spent the rest of the time on reaches back and forth across the lake to keep from heeling so much.
Coming back in the marina cove bucking a strong head wind coming straight down the cove, the 2000 model 5hp Merc 4-stroke on our new bracket pushed us right through the wind without skipping a beat.

It was an incredibly beautiful day here in NW California too... full sunshine, temps mid-60's on the beach and a nice breeze. Crewed on a co-workers San Juan 7.7 meter (about 25') for an 'in-bay' regatta.

This would have been a very nice day if it was June... for November it's a real winner. May have to take a day off this week to take Wotam out.

You guys are so lucky. Both Sat & Sun we had a marine layer making visability less than 1 mile in Newport Beach, CA. Santa Ana's predicted but never showed.

I went sailing for awhile yesterday. temps were in the mid to high 50s daytime (early mornings it is down in the low 40s). But the winds were in consistent. It kept varying from about 2-5 mph with an occasional wind up to perhaps 10mph. The direction of the wind also changed frequently (20 degree shift and then once in a while pushing upwards to a 180 degree shift) which was very annoying. I wound up staying out for about 2 hrs.

Tomorrow, rain is supposed to end in the morning. I may go out in late afternoon/early evening if it turns nice.

I'm envious.
We had a beautiful weekend, strong warm westerlies. The lake was a brilliant blue-green.

However, Labarca has been stored for the winter...at least one weekend too soon.

Saturday was the remnants of Noel...we had steady winds in the low 20's with gusts to 35+. The oddest thing was the water was running the opposite direction on Peconic Bay.

With FellowShip on the hard I spent Saturday sailing a Hunter 25.5, a very nice boat. The wind rocked and so did the temps, life is good.

Sunday I sailed with my best friends on the Bay, followed by dinner with them Sunday evening. This morning my boat was winterized, oil changed, and stored on the hard for the winter, and I'll cover her this afternoon. It was nice to have an extended sailing season, but it's time to go home for the winter. It's always sad to see it end, but, it has been a great summer, and it's always good to see family and friends again. Thanksgiving and Christmas are close at hand!

Frank, so how does sailing the Hunter 25 compare to our 25? What keel did it have?

Hunter 25.5, very different from a Hunter 25!
Honestly it is a better boat in a lot of ways. This has a shol keel which is 3'3" of cast iron with a very long chord and not anywhere near NACA shape, it would be greatly improved with a wing. However it sails very well and with a mere 7" of additional length but a whopping 1'1" of additional beam it has a lot of form stability. This is part of the Hunter series that brings us the 28.5 which is probably one of the great buys on the used boat market. I am like most and do not care for many hunter designs but this was a winning series. Terrific space below with a great salon berth, huge quarterberth, great inboard location if so equipped and a cockpit and deck to die for. I do not like the sloped coamings, a'la Beneteaus, but other than that a great deck with wide side decks. If I owned one, I would raise the standing rigging a size, (typical Hunter), but the Kenyon spars are excellent. Probably the only issue for some is how wide the cockpit is, it is a real reach to the other side to brace yourself. It weighs the same as a 25 with a lot more volume so you do feel the lightness of the construction vs our tanks. Don't get me wrong, I like a tank in a lot of situations but I have sailed this boat in winds up to 30 mph and it does very well. It belongs to a female friend of mine, you will notice her in many of my photos, and one of these days she is going to clean my clock racing head to head.
Remember this is the model we all enjoy looking at from the Bahama saga photos.

Frank, she is looking pretty good! I like some of the Hunters as well but haven't seen anything under 40' in my area. Some of the designs I am not too crazy about but friends who had them love em. Looks like your gal friend does some pretty heavy duty sailing, not to mention the Honda 15!
Speaking of Beneteaus, I might be chartering a 50' April 08 in BVI. Cant wait.

That is not a photo of my friend's boat, it is of a boat whose exploits have been documented on these pages over the last two years. Barbara's is very normal.

<font color="blue"><font size="4"><font face="Comic Sans MS">Well....on Nov 5th 2007 it was fantastic sailing in the San Juans.
Winds 10-15 knots sun was out..... pointed up Guemes channel for about 3 NM before having to tack.
Was having so much fun I had to pee in a water bottle on deck.
When I got back to the slip had to wash down the deck.

The weekend was great here in Upper Michigan as well. Monday was an entirely differnet story however. Winds steady at 32 mph, gusts to 55. Snow ranged from 2" in our area to 13" in the "upper elevations" a few miles south of us. There are only two boats still in the water here. Thankfully mine was not one of them.
