I'm considering purchasing a new Honda 9.9hp with electric tilt and electric start. This unit tops out at 117lbs and will be mounted on a Catalina 25 standard rig. Is there anyone out there that has had experience with this engine mounted on the C25?
I have the Tohatsu 9.8 XXL shaft at 108 lbs with electric start, manual tilt. I love the motor. Mike, right next to me, has the Honda 9.9 with electric start but manual tilt. He has it on the stock motor mount. Works fine.
I have a new Honda 9.9hp 25" with all the electric goodies and have found it to be a quiet, reliable and fuel efficient engine. I was worried about the weight but after upgrading the bracket it doesn't seem to make any difference to the handling of the boat. I would recommend one.
Ben, I have a Honda on my 25 and its a great engine but heavy, if that means anything. Its fairly quiet, but reliable and low maint. I also have a Tohatsu on my dinghy and its also fantastic. Tohatsu's weigh less than Honda's and are cheaper. Both engines you can do a top flush with is easier on the back. Just make sure you have a local dealer to do repairs. Either way, you cant go wrong. Good luck. Steve
I bought a Honda 9.9 XL, electric start, but no tilt, this spring. I've been absolutely delighted -- it's worth the extra expense over other motors. I've found that the motor is very nicely balanced and easy to tilt -- more so than my 1985 Mariner two-stroke, which was much lighter. Absolutely get the four spring motor mount -- which makes raising and lowering the motor easy.
I'd question the weight and expense of electric tilt. Go look at one without the electric tilt and see if it's that difficult for you. If you can raise and lower the mount, you can tilt the motor.
One more time... The Honda 8 is the same engine, tuned for more low-end torque and less high-RPM-HP (at RPMs you'll never use) for a couple of boat units less (a marketing thing only). Make of that what you wish.
Dave, I have to agree. I have the 8 Honda which the PO had purchased new. I was a little apprehensive but after use, I can tell you I have NO regrets. Steve
