Does anyone know what year Catalina first introduced wing keels?

After checking old posts I thought it was 88.

I ask because I am looking at a 87 that the owner thinks has an original wing keel.

This is a great site, I have spent many a late night going through the old threads learning about the Catalina 25.

Thanks for helping me as I search for a new boat hopefully a late model and if all goes well the cream of the crop 88-89.

Looking at our "Owners" directory, I'd say they started during the '87 model year. There are a few earlier ones, but those could be retrofits.

John;

I have a retrofit wing on my '82. I had this confirmed by the Catalina factory. Mine was a fin that was retrofitted by the Catalina factory. I could tell by the different bolt hole pattern in the bilge. The bolt pattern for new wing was different than the old fin, and there were old bolt holes that were filled in. Pull the bilge cover and look at the floor of the bilge, you should see the original holes, unless the '87's and '88's had the same pattern by the time your '87 was built.
It may also be that your boat was built towards the end of '87 for sale as a '88 model year.

I know this is probably not feasible but I'm going to ask anyway.

Does anyone know if you can retrofit a fixed keel on a boat originally built as a wing keel? Will Catalina sell you just a keel? Any idea what it might cost? Maybe I could find a junk boat with a fixed keel.

The reason I'm asking is that if I decide to move my '89 from the Galveston Bay area up to Lake Travis in the Texas Hill Country I'd like to have the fixed keel since the water is 150'+ deep in most of the lake.

Gary: I suspect this is not a "bolt-on" option. The reason is that, looking at my '85 lead fin keel (as I call it) and another one that was damaged, it's apparent that the lead fin keel is not simply a piece of lead, like the wing is. The lead fin is encapsulated in a thick layer of something, covered by fiberglass and gelcoat. I suspect the "something" is needed to give the keel the same profile and overall weight even though lead is significantly more dense than cast iron (the material of the original fin keel). So, the keel itself and its retrofit installation might be considerably more complex than a wing keel retrofit. Just my suspicion...
