I need some help from the technical editor or someone who has come across the following: The bronze turning ball on my waterballast 250 was found to be broken and jammed into the recess where it is normally mounted. It was removed and I will purchase another from Catalina. The centerboard bracket only has two bolts in it at this time; two must have come out. I'm going to have the boat hauled and a bottom job done in December. At the same time, I'd like to get these two items fixed. In order to get the parts and prep the boat yard guys with info, can anyone tell me the bolt size and material? Also, has anyone installed these bolts? Does the centerboard need to be removed in order to do this? How does the turning ball get inserted into its recess?
Warren from Catalina in Largo told me that there should be some type of diagrams or literature about these items that the Association has.
Help will surely be appreciated! Thanks,
Mark Lewalski "Little Wind" C250WB #206 Upper Tampa Bay
Mark, I sure hope you'll take a dozen pics and post them as you fix this issue.
I would not delay in pulling the boat with two of the 4 bolts missing. You are certainly going to have to remove the board to get to the turning ball area.
The ball is mounted on a spindle but I'm not sure how that is mounted. I would go back to Catalina and ask for details of how it was originally mounted.
If it's bonded into the bottom of the keel haul tube, then fixing it is going to be a challange, not impossible, but a challange, so do it on dry land.
Worst case is that you would have to cut open the mound under the cabin step in order to get to the ball area. That's really not that big of a deal - dremmel to the rescue.
You're close enough to Largo to warrant taking the boat there! Did you ask about that????
I'm sure others will chime in with more valuable help.
I am sure you will get helpful posts from WB owners. Also, I would recommend that you call the Catalina factory and pose your question to them. That is one of the advantages of having a boat that is still in production.
Welcome to the forum and, as Paul noted, we'd love to have pictures of the project so that others can benefit from your experience.
250 people please correct me if I am wrong, but hasn't it been decided that the SS cable should be replaced with cordage? My SS cable sawed through the ball on my 25 when the ball stopped rolling. I would think there are great ropes to choose from that would be easier on the turning ball and the entire cable run.
This past year I checked with Catalina concerning the turning ball. What I found out is they do have a replacement; part and mounting bracket- that is the easy part. From below you have to saw and smooth out the old ball and connections then from above the part is on a bracket that slides down the tube to position. It is secured from above. Since I did not have a damaged ball other than corrosion and pitting I buffed my out and it seems to be working OK. From the sounds of it and from the diagrams sent me by Catalina the install process entails allot of work!
Frank you are correct Catalina now has a vectra (I think that is what they call it) line for a replacement. In fresh water the stainless cable is not as much an issue. I have the replacement line from Catalina it was $25. However, I have not replaced the old cable yet. My thinking is we have zebra mussels in the lake and I have found clumps of the little devils up in and around the CB slot. I am concerned that the mussels sharp shell would cut the line and I so far do not have any problems with the stainless cable.
