I haven't been there myself. I have an acquaintence who windsurfs there - he said my boat would 'have a problem' sailing there due to weeds and shallow areas. He broke a skeg on his windsurfer in the middle of the lake, he hit muddy bottom. An insurance agent told me that there is a wind damage exemption for that area. It is an extremely windy place - its part of the Lethbridge Hurricane corridor.
I want to do at least one road trip this summer, so I'll probably go to Minnewanka in Banff National Park ro a long weekend. If I were to go as far as Lake Newell, I'd probably keep trucking east and go to Lake Diefenbaker. It might be the best place for mid summer sailing this side of the Rockies. You'd need at least one week for Dief. There are a group of Ghost Laker sailers that go there every summer.
