I'm in the process of building a new balanced rudder for my C25. A friend of mine tells me that if I extend the rudder down another 2-3 inches it will improve the pointing ability of the boat. I don't think another few inches would extend the rudder below the wing keel. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Steve

I just finished building a balanced rudder for my boat and wish I had added a couple of inches to the bottom end for that very reason. I think 2 would be plenty, even an inch would be a significant increase in area if clearance is a problem. The new rudder is a fnatastic improvement, even without the additional area. Alot of work but worth the effort.

Steve,

I'm not sure where the wing keel is relative to the bottom of the rudder, but you can get a bigger "effective" foil by installing a thin end plate that extends several inches out from the surface of the rudder. The plate will act like a "winglet" on an aircraft (like a C-17). It reduces the drag of the foil by reducing the vortexes that eminate from the tip. The effect is that of a larger foil. You could make them to be removable in case you want to race (legally).

The new balanced rudder from Cat. Direct will extend below the swing keel - at least on my '83 I've proven it by snagging it on some submerged pilings while my keel was up. You may want to reconsider adding additional inches below....the sound of the lower gudgeon ripping out of the transom is enough to make you wince; if you insist on going ahead with the project, I strongly recommend buying the reinforced gudgeon for the bottom *and* the top *and* reinforcing these with plywood from the inside.

There's always something!
