When I picked up stuff from the PO he had the original floor board. It looked terrible like some one had painted it with outdoor house stain, but I thought I could use it for a pattern. When I was unloading it at home I noticed the plywood itself looked good and wasn't delaminating at all. Just out of curiosity I put it on the bench in my greenhouse and sanded on it. To my surprise the finish came flaking off and right down to the old teak and holly veneer. The holly wasn't in as good of shape as the teak, but I think can live with it. I'll post the before picture and after sanding and 8 coats of Minwax Helmsman urethane. I have to say that I am very impressed with the quality of the original teak and mahogany plywood Catalina used in the sole of this old boat.
Dan, Isn't nice when something we think is ruined really just needs a bit of attention to bring it back to it's old glory? That looks like a nice piece of wood. Good job.
Looks nice Dan. Varnished wood really looks great doesn't it? As far as the black staining in the Holly is concerned, next time you sand it down to re-finish it, mix up some oxalic acid with water and put it on the holly. Let it soak in for several hours. Wash the acid off with water and it will brighten the holly up like new. Oxalic acid takes out the black stains. I tried before to neutralize the black stain on an oak window sill to no avail. I just learned it takes a while sitting there. I learned this becasue I'm getting forgetfull and left the acid on the stain for hours. When I remembered several hours later, much to my surprise, it got the black out.
