The temperature has dropped some here in North East Fla. and there is a nor'easter blowing. Thursday I took off from work for a funeral and then got some sailing in after. Pegged 6.5 knots on the GPS w/ reefed main & jib.

Then today just got back from brother Dave's house 20 miles further south on the St. Johns R. My younger brother Brandon was having a birthday party there. So I motored down last night as there wasn't any wind. But the Pereids meteor shower was happening and I got to see six.

I was surprised when my mother and father drove down. So I was able to take them for a short sail out to the middle of the river and back. He is 80. When I was a boy he always had boats of one kind or another. Of course we had a Sunfish for a short while. But I particularly remember a sailboat that was foam filled plywood with no well at all. It was kinda like a board sailer but bigger with just a couple of grab rails. And it had a cat rig, one big sail with the mast right out of the bow. He would take us out on the St. Johns on it.

Sailed back this afternoon with reefed main and full jib doing 5 to 6 kts. on starboard tack the whole way.

Safe voyages,

Hello Ben,
I enjoyed your story. I'm sure your dad gets a lot of satisfaction out of seeing you continue on with something he introduced you to!
The boat you describe sounds similar to the one I cut my teeth on - a Sailfish which is a scaled down Sunfish. No well, but handrails and a cat rig - but I seem to remember the mast being aft of the bow by a couple-three feet.
Thanks for evoking the memories <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> .
BTW, is that extension cord USCG approved <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> ?

OJ: To sharpen your memories, the sailfish and sunfish both used latteen rigs with a short mast that was a couple of feet aft of the bow, and two equal-length spars holding an equilateral triangular sail. I built a sailfish when I was about 12. My mom made a cotton duck sail for me--boy did it make sailing tough if you ever dumped the boat! One of my saddest memories is of discovering that the frame was becoming badly warped--the whole boat twisted, and no amount of torture could get it back to its proper shape. No such problems with my Sunfish, which is probably my favorite boat ever.
