Has anyone have an Idea on how long a tongue extension should be, For C25 fin keel trailer, What type of material (extrusion size)it can be made out of?I have seen some with a wheel mounted on it by the tongue. Is this important to catch the wt by the tongue. Is thier anyplace I can find planes for this thank you...Don

A "strap launch" or "rope launch" would be much easier and not require an extension. Google it or search in the forum archives.

Isn't the required extension length really ramp dependent? I don't trailer launch but have been curious about whether my extension would be long enough for any application.

Hi John, Happy New Year!

I haven't trailered since the 25' but I'd say your thought about the ramp determining the tongue length is right on.
I suspect that those that do trailer about would in addition to the tongue also carry a rope launch alternative for those ramps that just don't get it . I suspect that on some ramps while using the rope launcher the folks involved pay special attention to the trailer tongue weight. It wouldn't do to have the boat do a "stand at attention" attitude upon attempting to enter the water.

I never liked trailering my other boats since when I want to sail I'd prefer that the ramp didn't determine whether or not I would sail.
But in life all is a compromise

Don, I have a fin keel boat, and the extension for mine is 25ft, and its not a bit to short, I have use every bit of that, and heck may have used a foot or two more. With 25ft, my tires were still in the water, but like the one guy said depends on the ramp, the ramps I have launched on have been little shollow, so needed all the space, have recovered on one ramp that only need about 22ft, But it would be safe to say 25ft is good number.
As far as materal, I used 2inch steel square tube. with wheels on it, pic below.
I liked the strap idea but felt safer with my set up, just me.
