We have a 9.9 hp evinrude mounted on the starboard side of the stern. The mounting is parallel with the boat. The stern as you know, is concave(or is it convex) in shape. Coming out a bit at the center of the stern and rounding in a bit near the sides. Therefore the motor mount and also the motor are not exactly pointed straight, but a bit to one side. This causes a difference in the steering of the boat. It is a breeze steering to starboard with the motor running and pointed the opposite way, but a quite a bit less responsive turning to port. The rudder is now fighting against the direction the propeller wants to take us. Is this normal, and if not is there a recommended fix? Thanks in advance. P.S.- If you are not completely confused by my description above, let me know and I can PM you personally to confuse you.
just turn the outboard slightly in one direction or another. Normal.
When backing, turn the outboard to point the direction you want to go. Get up some speed. Shift to neutral. Use the rudder.
When going forward under power, once in a clear area, let go of the rudder. The boat will turn slightly one way or the other. Turn the motor slightly until the boat goes in a perfectly straight line. Everything is now balanced, although this will change a little as you throttle up or down.
All in all it doesn't matter much. Maybe a few 1/10 of miles per gallon.
What Jim said, and as far as easier starboard turns; It seems to me that when turning to starboard your rudder is angled toward your outboard and the prop wash deflects off the rudder causing a more pronounced turn whereas in a port turn no such condition exists. When backing in tight areas I use both rudder and outboard. But of course, whatever is comfortable and works for you ...........
