New to the forum. Bought a 1982 25 Catalina 4 years ago. Finally getting in water this Spring (I hope). Really love this forum. Great resource!
I must purchase am auxiliary OB and have read other comments. I'm down to the following:
Yamaha 8hp, 25" electric start, etc. $1,900+ tax at Ed's Super Marine store in Richmond, VA. Unfortunately, I must take a full day (and night) and drive to their location from Massachusetts. Not excited at the prospect.
Local Tohatsu dealer with a 25" 9.8hp. $2,300 plus 5% tax. Good people, known them for years.
Same motor from onlineoutboards.com for $1,850 (bank wire) free shipping, etc.
While I like my local dealer, the $450+ differential is substantial (enough to pay for a new 3 spring bracket and then some).
Just curious what people think about Yamaha vs. Tohatsu and service aspect. I should mention that I have a good friend who has been a outboard mechanic for over 30 years, so service s/b problem. (plus the Tohatsu should be simple compared to the Merc 225 on my powerboat).
Tim, I have the Nissan/Tohatsu 9.8 electric start X_long shaft, it's a great motor and a great buy especially if you use the forum's discount line. It comes in a box and for me worked right out of the box.
If your friendship means so much to you how about discussing the price from Online Outboards, with them and perhaps a deal can be struck that is amenable to all involved. Just a thought.
