When I come out of my marina and head south down the Potomac, during high tide many sailboats will venture far out of the channel with no problems. But there is an area where you can cross over to the Virginia side to access the Washington Sailing Marina. Normally, many will wait until further south before cutting completely across but some brave souls head across right after the wood pier on the south end of Natl Reagan Airport. One time when I had my boat in the Wash sailboat Yard getting a bottom painting, I had lunch at their snack bar overlooking that area south of the airport...at low tide. At low tide, the mud bank is clearly visible but...so are 2 or 3 supermarket shopping carts !!! I'm always watching some of these sailboats cutting across close to that south end -- one day there will be a reckoning (or wrecking) with one of those carts.
