I had my 1989 wk ,tr for about 9 months and I think it was on the trailer for sometime before I made my purchase. My problem is the head (which I have never used). I think the hand pump seals are shot, as I can not get it to prime and/or discharge. Has anyone taken one apart? is it a big deal? Any tips or traps?
Welcome aboard, as you will come to know there are many knowledgable individuals willing to help on this site. This was my first summer aboard a 25 cat and I have learned much.
Any way I have the owners manual for the head that came aboard my 84 Cat, the name escapes me but if interested I can fax or mail a copy. Send me an e-mail frich1230@aol.com
Make sure your thru-hull for the intake is open and that a stopper is in the head sink drain. Both can affect intake, but shouldn't affect the discharge. Our pump assembly was giving us some problems a few years ago (leaking) and we bought the rebuild kit for our Groco HF. It was pretty simple to take apart and reassemble- there are several seals that could prevent any pumping from happening if they go bad. I will say that the kit was $70 and a new marine head (see Jabsco) can be had for a hundred or so (e.g., one boat unit). But I don't know if there may be issues getting a different model to mount properly. Our Groco HF goes for $190 at West Marine. Many sailors on this board are happy with the simplicity of porta-pottie which would be another alternative.
Here's a little ditty by Don Casey on the delicate matter of head maintenance...
The head on my '79 C-25 was a disaster. This was the factory "no-name" head and was made in Canada. By the time I figured out that a $70 Groco kit MIGHT work, Boat US put the Wilcox-Critten on sale for less than a $100 bucks. Easy swap.
The marina where my boat is moored no longer allows porti-potties to be emptied in the rest rooms due to the mess they create. I live down stream from a KOA on the Animas River and I'd like to shoot the campers that dump porti-potties in the river because they're to lazy to stop by the dump station.
