I have lost one bolt on the upper gudgeon and the other 2 are loose. There seems to be no access except to cut an opening from the cockpit. Anyone else have this problem and have a solution??
Pretty scarey when your gudgeons start to fall off and you're in the middle of the bay...happened to me.
The best fix I know of is to install an access plate for the upper gudgeon, thru-bolt the transom with some good sized washers on the cockpit side.
Better do the same for the lower gudgeon too. Catalina fiberglassed a bronze plate on the transom side and just screwed into it to hold the gudgeon on. Bad idea. Grind away the fiberglass pad on the inside, drill through and install bolts.
Otherwise you may find yourself holding on to a tiller/rudder not connected to the boat!
