First time going to this show. Had the time and they were having sailboats at this otherwise motorboat and fisherman boat show. They had 3 Catalinas on display: 32, 38 & 42. Had about 3-4 Hunters of about same size and same with the Beneteaus. Also 2 Tartans, 18' Precision, an Alerion, 1 Flying Scot, those Hobie sailcraft - Catamarans and the new line of canoe/kayak style sailboats they sell. Chesapeake Light Craft the wooden boats built from a kit were there as well. One or two sailboat hardware booths and that was about it.
In middle of winter it was either the Baltimore Boat Show, watch TV or do some chores around the house. It came down to a tough decision.
I did appreciate getting to see the Chesapeake Light Craft wood kayaks and sailboats that you build from their plans or kits. It's one of those things I would like to do - Build my own small sailboat. It may never happen but I like thinking about it.
As far as who had the most crowds...between the Beneteaus, Hunters, Catalinas and Tartans....? First of all, most people had to access these boats by getting onto a middle platform and from the platform, you could then walk down to the boat of choice. They were all accessible from the same major platform. Most people came onto the platform by way of the steps nearest the Beneteaus. Then the Hunters were next, then the Catalinas. The Tartans were at the end but there was another set of steps at that end, though, most people came the other route. So...it seemed that most people were around the Hunter boats. Beneteau had 2 or 3 boats but not as many came gathered around them. Perhaps because one of them...believe a 34 footer had a giant wheel and the only way to gain access forward of that wheel was to first climb onto the narrow non-skid area behind the cockpit seats. At this location...if you have a mis-step, then you take a plunge to floor below. I think many passed this boat up because they did not want to climb past the wheel. Hunter was next in line and so people seem to migrate to them and they also had 4 boats compared to 2 or 3 from the other mfrs.
Oh ! One Beneteau and one Hunter had a bow thruster.
Hmmm ....maybe a new project ? Anyone have a bow thruster on a Cat 25 ?
Bow Thruster! Now that's an interesting topic. How much more speed will we gain? BTW, I asked about the different boats out of curiosity as I have noticed some charters do not use Catalina's but prefer Benateaus. I havent seen any from below so not sure how they compare. Steve A

A bow thruster won't add any forward speed. It's basically a tube below the waterline that connects port to starboard around the beginning of the VBerth area. Inside the tube is a electric driven prop/fan blade. You use it to assist in leaving or approaching a dock. The Cruise ships have them and the big benefit for them is they do not need a tug boat to maneuver into the dock. So...now we are starting to see them as an option on some of the large sailboats of say 40' or so.
I saw an article in oe of the magazines (do not recall which one but about a month or so ago) that described how to install your own bow thruster.
