I was mulling this over, and I've mentioned it to one other board member, I'm not sure what reception would be like, but I thought I'd throw this out there and see what response is like.
I need a lot to get my boat running the way I want it to. What I need falls into three categories:

Stuff I need to learn

Stuff I need to buy

Friends to talk boat with

I was thinking that a "Great Lakes Cats" get-together (for purely selfish reasons) might satisfy one or more of these needs. I bounced a similar idea around at the TSBB and got a handful of positive responses before the whole thing degenerated into how much beer will there be, and Toronto isn't as sexy as Florida.
My idea would be for a single day deal. Boats or no boats, makes no difference. I envision a schedule like this:
Sat Morning - meet & greet, breakfast Post Breakfast - Presentation on Rigging and a Q&A session (I will ask Caroline at the Rigging Shoppe in Toronto if she or her staff would make themselves available - ideally we supply a boat or parts thereof for her to use to demo stuff) Lunch - Catered, or go to a local greasy spoon. Presentation one - Circumnavigating the Great Lakes - a friend of mine did all the lakes one summer in a Catalina 27, his slides and banter make for good entertainment. Presentation two - Racing tactics and strategies, I'd have to find someone, but I have a couple of ideas of folks who would do a great presentation. Dinner followed by a social event (theatre?, concert? camp-fire?)
My idea is that if we do this on a Saturday, then if some locals show up, the chance may exist to go for a sail on Sunday. If locals don't show up, then there is a lot of city here to see.
If folks do attend this, then the least they'll go away with is some knowledge and names of other great lakes sailors they can call and say hi to when they pass through.
I'll be AFK until Monday, but I'll be interested to see what your thoughts are on this when I get back.
Chris, Great Idea and I don't mean to hijack your plan but Lake St. Clair might be a better venue because it is in the center of the Great Lakes chain and more people might attend with their boats because of the shorter driving or sailing distances involved; especially for a weekend affair. I know that Detroit and/or Windsor are not as sexy as Toronto or Florida but there are a lot of marinas for transient dockage on the US and Canadian side of the lake near the mouth of the Detroit river or St Clair river so the possibility exists for the event to be a truly international event with activities schedualed in both countries. The same thing could be accomplished in the Port Huron /Sarnia area, Although I think Lake St Clair offers more opportunity for sailing because of the ability to launch closer the open lake without having to fight the swift current the exists under the Blue Water Bridge. I would be happy to assist getting something like this together in the St Clair area but no matter where it is held I will make a point of attending.
Chris, I have my 250WK in Belleville, but am a new sailor with lots to learn and would definitely be interested in attending (in person, but not with the boat as I don't trailor and don't have the time to sail it to TO).
I agree with your points Renzo - I was thinking exactly that as I was considering venue. I live 40 minutes North of Toronto, and if this was in Cleveland or Chicago, I would have a hard time convincing herself to go.
Lake St. Clair is likely a good location. I don't know if I could arrange speakers and so forth for that though. Do you have contacts down that way? Does anyone know of venues? Preferable someplace that has a Garage large enough to pull a boat into for rigging dial;ogue, with seating and a projector screen for guest speakers?

Belleville is nice and close, whether this goes or not, we should try to get together sometime. This is our first boat as well, although we have sailed on OPB's for the past season and took the CYA basic course. We still are low on the learning curve - hence the desire for something like this.

What subjects did you have in mind? I don't think finding an area with seating and a projector screen will pose much of a problem either (I will make some inquiries today) but I'm not clear on the need for a garage large enough to house a boat. I would think that that type of dialog could be accomplished at dockside or in a parking lot near a launch ramp. When were you thinking of doing this? I guess I assumed you were planing in late spring or early summer. I will leaving town in a few days and I'm not sure if I will have access to to the internet so I may not be able to discuss this further till I get back in a couple of weeks. In the meantime maybe some others have some good ideas. It would also be interesting to see how many other Great Lakes C-25s might want to attend this type of event.
Judging by response here we would have a turnout of 3. Others may be lurking and considering it.
I was thinking of this as being a Pre-launch event, but that is coming up fast. My thoughts on the garage (hangar actually) was that then we could have a fully rigged trailerable for the folks to demo on for the rigging bit. I am a visual learner and for me that would way beat out powerpoint for that presentation.
Contact me via the email above or at cpotvin73 at the server hotmail.com (you know the drill...) we can work out details. Anyone who has interest in this please feel free to contact me.
Jack Metzel sails on Lake St. Clair, and he might be able to recommend local experts who would be willing to teach seminars. If you decide upon a date, location and agenda, I'll be very surprised if you don't get more interest. You don't have to limit it to members of our Assn. If you want to increase attendance (which might help you attract better speakers), you could invite members of other Assns., such as Trailer Sailors.
I think this is great. Do it over a weekend either TO or St. Clair would be great with me. Might suggest that we arrange a "Live" Swap Meet to. That will pull more participants in I would think. If you need help with multi media or computing equipment let me know I have stuff available.
I love thias idea especially if we can get it off the ground by "First Launch" (May 1st for me.
